Dr. Brent Prather

Dr Prather, a local pediatrician and alerginest presented a talk on health, service, and wellness. He outlined his own background in Rotary and how Rotary values had always shapped his practice. He discussed how he often took gratis or medicade patients with his deeply held value of service above self. He sited the value of love in producing wellness and a more satisfying and meaningfull life. His presentation was uplifting and timely.

with a "thank you" gift

Zorn Sajovic of Lafayette North Rotary Club provided us with a classification talk. He is a first generation American having entered the country when he was 14 years old. He began flying while still in high school and converted that talent into a life time career flying search and rescue mission for the US Coast Guard. His leadership talents advanced him to the rank of Captain (O-6)with the responsibility of Commanding Officer of one of the Coast Guard major home ports. His activities in Rotary began in 1988 as a community assignment but has continued well into his retirement. He has participated in many Rotary functions including the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, overseas service projects and Rotary International conventions.

Tom DeVilbiss, our semi-permanent visiting Rotarian from North Dakota presented a program on Shelter Box USA. After a video, some photographs of an actual kit and a review of the programs web site, he informed us of how his club had recently raised $6,000.00 for the program in a three day event. He asserted that it is not impossible for an international service project of this nature to directly benefit membership via the media attention that can be garnished through it.

Pinhook Rotary former President, Arch Hill gave a sientific presentation on Global Warming. Today, the effects of co2 on climate change is considered to be 2 times greater than even recent models had predicted. According to Arch, several cycles in the past have been influenced by sun spots. Polution in our current atmosfere, to some extent, reflects the sun's rays as well as holds heat in. He pointed out the use of polar ice caps to measure the effects of increase and decrease of certain gasses over time. The second part, and conclusion to his presentation will be held later this month.

Kyle Mayers of TV channel 10, gave a presentation on weather. His power point featured different forms of lightning, tornados, and an explanation of how forcasts differ among the forcasters in the area. Kyle used an interactive example with the club that demonstrated how forcasts are constantly changing due to updated information.

New business included the club members voting to give $300 along with the other Lafayette clubs donations to purchase a 6 foot, trailer-mounted Rotary sign to use at any of the 4 clubs events.

Arlene Hebert, author of Angels in Training, Twin Angels School,described how she became a writer of children's books of imagination and encouragement. During her years as an RN, doing hospital work, she had an inspirational moment where she would write children's books and donate the sales proceeds to St Jude’s Childrens Hospital. The process of writing has led her to great satisfaction (6 completed books) and new purpose in life.

Our newest member was welcomed to the club. Jacques Royal acted as sponser in lieu of Bernard de Reynies, the actual sponser who recently returned to France.

Our business meeting began with a demonstration of our new Pinhook Rotary web site. Tom DeVilbiss pointed out features that members might find useful. Next on the agenda was a treasurer's report. Members received a full accounting, including income from dues, and fund raisers, as well as expenses and donations for projects and charities. It was desided to move our c.d. to another bank paying a higher interest. Some budget items were deferred to the board of directors.

finally, old and new business included Polio irradication project, LEMU, Haiti relief,and a project for community action (grafitti cleanup)

Better Business Bureau of Acadiana

Connie Marcantel from the Better Business Bureau of Acadiana, presented for the club. She described how the BBB rated businesses that participated, what benifits were for consumers and businesse alike, and other interesting facts about her organization. The BBB provides despute arbitration and rates businesses according to nuimber of desputes, and desputes resolved.

It was also announced that a general club meeting would occur on January 18 with a demonstration of how to get maximum use from the new club web site. Also on the agenda is election of a new member. The club secretary tresurer will discuss the budget and club members will vote on budgetary decisions.

The first meeting of 2010 was held on January forth. The speaker was Bili LaCompt, director of Faith House. Faith House is a non-profit organization that provides emergency shelter for battered women and children. Though housed in Lafayette Parish, it also serves the needs of the surrounding area. Ms LaCompt gave descriptions of services provided, how Faith House was funded, and how volunteers to work with clients were welcomed. She also said that articles of clothing and other items that could be used in the shelter would be appreciated.

Al Pfeuffer offered a folding, roll away bed, that Ms LaCompt said would be excellent for the facility. Other members inquired about volunteering.

On a sad note, Mike Sullivan, former Pinhook Rotary president(1990-91)passed away and his memorial service was to be had this day.

Don Phan, District 6200 Ambassadorial Scholar to Singapore spoke to us about his work and adventures in Asia. He provided first hand insight to a part of the world that many of us do not know, or have skewed memories of. From his academic home in Singapore he across India by train and enjoyed the hospitality of several Rotary Clubs. He also took the occasion to visit his mothers native country of Viet Nam. We had a delightful time getting to know this extra ordinary young man. Dist Governor Greg Landry and Assistant Governor Harold Domingue were also in attendance.

Maria Placer is a former TV 10 newscaster who now runs 232-HELP / 211, Southwest Louisiana’s comprehensive Information and Referral (I&R) Center. At TV 10, Ms. Placer served as an informal ombudsman to get help for folks featured in some broadcasts. So 232-HELP is a perfect fit. She leads a staff of 8 not including volunteers (who complete a required certification course).

232-HELP assists Louisianan’s with a variety of problems and critical needs requiring immediate help. Placer described some of the current needs including concerns about the H1N1 flu pandemic, the impact of the recession on food stocks at the Second Harvest Food Bank, and help with mortgage foreclosures.

232-HELP marshals pro-bono services from lawyers, doctors and dentists. More than sixty dentists participate. During emergencies, like hurricanes, their center provides information about evacuation routes, shelters, and sources for food, gasoline, ice and tarpaulins.

State funds have helped them install a sophisticated telephone system. This system enables similar organizations located in other areas, even as far away as San Diego, to “plug in” to provide help during major emergencies – and vice versa. The center received over 50,000 calls during the Gustav & Ike hurricanes in 2008. 232-HELP is negotiating with the State of Louisiana to operate a number of the state’s 800 telephone numbers.

232-HELP is moving their Referral and Education Center to a new office location in downtown Lafayette – the former Bell’s Sporting Goods store.

So when you need help in South Louisiana, 232-HELP is the logical place to start.

Christmas 2009

Pinhook Rotary celebrated the Christmas Season the evening of December 12, 2009. Hosting were Bill and Mo Whitehead. Food was great and the decorations were festive. During the party, members said goodbys to Bernard who would be returning to France. And for added excitement a candle caught a mantle decoration on fire. (It was put out right away).
The party capped a year of changes that ended with optimism for the future. Thanks Bill and Mo.

Topic: School Facilities Master Plan

Mr. Domingue's firm, Architects Southwest, is one of several firms involved in developing a School Facilities Master Plan for the Lafayette Parish School System. A facilities master plan is a document describing a strategy to address the need for facility improvements and for capital investments to support current and future educational programs. The plan covers a 20 year horizon.

Architects Southwest has completed a physical survey of the 46 [47?] school campuses and support facilities that comprise the Lafayette Parish School System. He discussed the planning process and the ongoing community dialogue where survey results are presented to interested members of the Lafayette community at a series of public meetings.

Program Summary - November 23

Speaker 1: John Forcade

Topic: Lafayette Wildcatters Arena Football Team

Mr. Forcade, a former University of Mississippi quarterback and New Orleans Saint is involved in launching, and coaching, a new arena football team in Lafayette: the Lafayette Wildcatters.

Arena football is played with 8 men teams on a converted ice hockey rink. The ice is covered with a mat and the boards are padded. Compared to regular football, the games tend to be higher scoring, there are usually fewer running plays because of the narrow playing field, and no punts (ceiling constraint).

The Wildcatters will compete in a 10 team league including teams located in Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Texas and Louisiana. The season runs from March through July. The Wildcatters will play in Blackham Coliseum.

Speaker 2: Dennis Hayer, Jim Chance

Topic: Volunteer Opportunities with the Salvation Army this Christmas Season

Cadet Dennis Hayer provided an overview of the Salvation Army's Lafayette operations with facilities on 6th and 3rd Streets. The Salvation Army ministers to the down and out and homeless by providing food, clothing and shelter. Salvation Army seminarians are ordained to this ministry and their hope is to change a life for the better.

The Salvation Army is an efficient charity with 82 to 86% going directly to provide services for the needy. The Salvation Army Thrift Store is currently being remodeled.

Because individual's situations vary, they don't have a time limit on how long someone needing help can stay in their facility. They also offer comprehensive drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in larger cities.

Salvation Army also provides disaster recovery services, for example, they have portable kitchens pulled by tractor trailers. Available for state and national declared disasters. They aren't typically the first responders, but they can mobilize within a week and are equipped to stay and help as long as necessary.

Salvation Army Christmas programs include visits with senior citizens and toys for kids. A relatively new development is the “counter” kettle - a donation kettle designed to be placed at local businesses, perhaps near cash registers. Several Lafayette-area banks participated last year and the Salvation Army is hoping to recruit additional businesses this Christmas.

Regarding volunteer opportunities, Cadet Hayer provided this list:

1. Bell Ringers - a civic organization or group can volunteer to man a kettle for a period of time. Typical locations: Walmart, Sam's Club, Hobby Lobby

2. Phone Crew - Help coordinate volunteers by contacting them to remind them of assignments, coordinate schedules, find substitutes, and react to problems. Phone volunteers will receive a list of frequently asked questions.

3. Drivers - within Lafayette and a six parish area

4. Counter Kettle - Assist in placing counter kettles with reputable businesses, adequate controls.

5. Cash Donations - also graciously accepted.

Salvation Army is also recruiting speakers to tell businesses and civic groups about their programs.

Jim Chance is coordinating volunteer efforts for the Salvation Army. Their Christmas fund raising season runs from the Friday after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve.

Ms. Lantier and Mr. Omeara

Mr. John Omeara provided the club with an update of the 2009/2010 Broadway Series that is being presented at the Heymann Preforming Arts Center. There were 5 shows in this years series including "Camelot" and "The Wedding Singer" making this a very impressive venue for a community the size of Lafayette. He also discussed other opportunities available in this area for preforming arts.

Ms. Jeanne Lantier also update us concerning the Petroleum Club of Lafayette improvements and membership opportunities.
